Biography
Victoria Yip is a vocalist and performer in Tkaronto, Canada. Raised in a classical music household, they learned how to play the piano and violin before the age of 6. Victoria sang in the elementary school choir, choosing the cello as their strings class instrument in middle school and sang in the after-school glee club. They switched from playing the cello to the double bass and learned the baritone saxophone when their high school’s orchestra and jazz band needed players, and they were given the opportunity to close their final senior year Music Night with the last vocal solo of the night. It was no secret to anyone who knew Victoria that Music was their ultimate escape - these extreme acts of creative procrastination from grade school academia resulted in Victoria earning the Certificate of Excellence in Music and Eric Walker Vocal Excellence awards at their graduation, having effectively performed in every instrumental discipline and almost every musical ensemble at all of their non-creative arts schools, from Kindergarten to Grades 1 to 12.
Deciding to specialize in voice, Victoria’s desire to dabble in as many musical outlets as possible continues to thrive with what they do now: Performing at various venues with a plethora of different musical styles, from disco to classical music to jazz and rnb; they have helped their fellow musicians and local creative arts communities cultivate, release and share music professionally for the past decade.
Victoria is currently the lead singer of 7-piece disco/funk band Soul Sublime, a vocalist of three in the new R&B band Why So Blue?, and a member of the SING! Toronto A Cappella Champions, SPLÜSH. Victoria has performed at Youth Pride events with their collegiate funk band Funk 1001 and sings classical music at recitals held by organizers in the Downtown, North Regions and GTA. They sing in the Candy Cane Carolers every holiday season. Victoria teaches voice, piano, and violin in private and and group lessons, both remotely and in-person.
They were cast in the 2022 Toronto Fringe and Kick & Push Festival productions of the original Canadian musical A Perfect Bowl of Pho by Nam Nguyen and Wilfred Moeschter, and will be featured in the upcoming Official Cast Album. They played Rose Red and the played the cello in an online University of Toronto campus production of Dave Malloy’s Ghost Quartet (Victoria College). Victoria was a featured performer in Shifting Ground Collective’s No Place Like Home: A Winter Cabaret (2022), the Doctor in the premiere of Canadian musical The Last Piece and they have played Flight Attendant Ivy in Shreya Jha’s musical, Connections (TCDS). Victoria’s first musical role was playing several characters in the ensemble in Ember Island Players’ staged concert production of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.
Victoria studied vocal jazz performance at Humber Polytechnic’s Bachelor of Music program. Victoria is immeasurably grateful to be able to bring people together through the power of the arts.
